The strange thing about OJD197R and its sister bus OJD170R is that they were both given the CMS livery after Stagecoach Holdings had acquired the operation. It was Stagecoach who had arranged the transfer of these buses from Hampshire Bus, perhaps Stagecoach had originally intended to go with local colour schemes before using the corporate stripes livery?

This bus, TRN469V, found its way to Lincolnshire Road Car like many of Carlisle's Atlanteans. LRCC converted 1469 to an open topper for seafront services in Skegness along with 1467, 1479 and 1485. I was fortunate to ride on 1467 and 1469 in the summer of 2004, when they were performing open top tours in Bath, they were sporting a yellow Heritage Bus Tours livery.

When CMS acquired the Carlisle Atlantean's and VRT's it painted 11 of them in the Ayres Red livery, 9 of them had previously sported allover adverts. 1451 & 1459 were the 2 exceptions which had only previously worn the NBC poppy red livery.

When the transfer of buses between Cumberland and Hampshire Bus took place (September 1987), they were both already owned by Stagecoach, which makes it strange that they then painted this ex-Hampshire DMS into the colours of Cumberland and not Stagecoach stripes.

Did you make a note of the identities of these 3 buses? Ive worked out that the Atlantean on the 669 has to be TRN485V, by virtue of the BEC ad and the lack of "Exact Fare Bus" sign at the front. 1485 was the only one that had a poppy red re-spray after these signs were issued. It had previously displayed a black allover ad for Sanyo & Fisher at County Store. 1485 was later painted yellow for an allover ad for "Live In Style" at the time the VRT's were transferred to Hampshire, because LHG457T had previously worn it.

The 28 Northern Counties-bodied Olympians leased in late 1987 for the unsuccessful Bexleybus network were initially ordered by Greater Manchester Buses. 21 of them, including this one, passed to Busways in Newcastle and Sunderland after Bexleybus folded. The Atlantean, meanwhile, started life in February 1980 as London Country AN231, and survived with Kentish Bus right up until 1997.

Just to be precise... Armchair took up the 65 in January 1991 with 17 all-Leyland Olympians, and added this 1982 ECW-bodied version in September 1995. It was easily distinguishable from the all-Leyland vehicles by virtue of its Gardner 6LXB engine. This photo was taken in Ealing Broadway sometime between 1995 and 1998, judging by the RW-class Wright Nimbus-bodied Renault S75 in the background.

T143 was one of fifteen ex-LT Titans acquired by London & Country for use on the 188 from November 1993. The London operations of L&C and Kentish Bus were combined into Londonlinks on 1 January 1995, and in April of that year - shortly after this photo was taken - T143 received a revised, and less elegant, livery incorporating more light green. It did not last much longer in the capital, passing to Clydeside in late 1996.

This Olympian was one of nine acquired by Atlas in October 1989, intended for the 107 but occasionally straying onto the 112 as here in Ealing Broadway. Atlas added an all-Leyland version (former demonstrator G21 HHG) in 1990, and all ten were sold to United Automobile Services in summer 1994, when the Pullman group took over Atlas. This particular vehicle was only a few days old when it was involved in a collision and had to be returned to Northern Counties for repairs, and note the misspelling of Palmers Green in the destination blind.

Greetings. Ironically the photograph you display of 1083 & 1177 East Kent Nationals sat in the bus station at Canterbury, are the sister buses to my 2 Nationals 1084 & 1178 NFN 84R & EFN 178L. Having seen this photograph, at some point in the future, hopefully both 84R & 178L can recreate this pose in Canterbury. Keep the good photographs coming Regards Carl

5 highbridge VRT's were graced by this livery, they were 1450, 1451, 1459, 1460 and 1462. This was my favourite livery and it was unfortunately short lived as Stagecoach soon muscled in. Your photo of 1450 shows this livery off superbly.

The registration number of 197KFM gives away this Bristol SC4LK as a former Crosville bus. This shot was taken in Sybil Street, Carlisle in 1977. Note the small number private cars.

Dennis Milner was an owner driver for a short time, I worked with him at CMS Wigton 1980-85 when he died. GW Wigton

Winter 1979, and I snapped this Ford Thames heading into town up Botchergate. I don't know who it was operating for at the time, but I suspect it has long since been scrapped.

Yeah, this was the loco in the Colwich Junction accident, written off as a result. No need to be negative about the name of Milton Keynes, it's wonderful living here.
